Having a similar problem that may well be related: kdm misbehaves when typing the first character of a password -- the entire password text field fills up and will not accept any keyboard input (like home, bksp, delete, even return). Many times an xserver restart is required by logging in through tty1 (ctrl+alt+bksp doesn't work).
