No. I just tried (Kubuntu 8.04.1): "Safe Graphics Mode" twice and it still 
locks up.

When I have a spare 15 minutes, I'll give OpenSuse 11 a go (in "safe" mode). I 
know it doesn't work in "normal" mode.
