Having part of this problem myself. Whenever I configure the podcast directory in the preferences of rhythmbox, it does not save across a reload. When I reload the app, it has defaulted AGAIN to my home directory.
This behavior breaks my auto-playlists which, since rhythmbox auto- playlists can't tell a podcast from music, depend on the path to tell if something is a podcast, not to mention filling up my home directory.
