Quite a soliloquy I have going here. Anyway, my radeon x700 card is simply not supported with the xorg 7.3 included with Ubuntu hardy. It should be, according to all documentation I saw before I bought it but DRI just doesn't work. I managed to install some testing versions of the drm modules and the card was intialised by drm. (This wasn't happening before)
