There was a fix very similar if not identical to your problem that got
pulled into 2.6.24-19. This doesnt help with your installation problem
though.
Go to cdimages.ubuntu.com and grab the latest hardy daily image. This
will reflect the newer kernel.
If that fixes the issue for you great! It will then be present in
8.04.1
