@ Richard Mayhew That is most likely because update-manager etc a lot of RAM (not all at once but they have a high change in ram/s) Or at least my RAM usage graph wiggles a lot more when update-manager/ apt-get is running so I assume this is the case.
High CPU usage + high RAM usage = stuttering - at least for me.
