Even i am facing the same situation and replugging audio jack didn't
help me. Also mute button of my keyboard just muted/unmuted internal
speaker.

Here is output of my /dev/sndstat
#########################################################
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ cat /dev/sndstat
Sound Driver:3.8.1a-980706 (ALSA v1.0.16 emulation code)
Kernel: Linux gopala-desktop 2.6.24-16-generic #1 SMP Thu Apr 10 13:23:42 UTC
2008 i686
Config options: 0

Installed drivers:
Type 10: ALSA emulation

Card config:
Internal PC-Speaker at port 0x61
HDA ATI SB at 0xfe024000 irq 19

Audio devices:
0: pcsp
1: ALC861 Analog (DUPLEX)

Synth devices: NOT ENABLED IN CONFIG

Midi devices: NOT ENABLED IN CONFIG

Timers:
7: system timer

Mixers:
0: PC-Speaker
1: Realtek ALC861
#####################################################

I think since the pc-speaker is first in the list, all the sound is being
played through it.
I discovered a workaround for me though. I used the following command

sudo alsa force-reload

After this, the output of /dev/sndstat has my card as first device and
also realtek mixer is first in the list.

I am ready to help if any further information is needed to fix this bug
:)
