This bug is also in Ubuntu Gutsy 7.10. It is tracked here --> http://trac.videolan.org/vlc/ticket/1140 Hopefuly the bug will be fixed in release 0.90.
To get around the problem you need to remove mozilla-plugin-vlc and make sure you have totem-mozilla installed. Restart Firefox and you should be OK.
