Tollef had me try today's daily build (20061011.1) for X, and it worked. Looks like the solution has been found.
The bootsplash still goes into a funny scrambled state where the background is black, statusbar background is rainbow, and status bar itself is correct. This happens much later now than it did before, and for a shorter period of time.
