I think this have something to do with NFS. The high bitrate mp3 was on
an NFS share on a networked server, when trying to write the low bitrate
output back to the NFS share (all permissions where OK) SoundConverter
crashed.
Trying it again later, but this time writing the output to the PCs local
hard drive, it all seemed to work...
