Lau above has a TSSTcorpCD/DVDW TS-L632D optical drive. This drive causes 
system freezes with some firmware versions. See here for details:

Also, another possible cause is the PATA/SATA combination in Intel chipsets and 
the way this works with libata. Examine the following link it may provide your 
solution.

The slow down as a result of the PATA/SATA combination may be causing at least 
some of the above mentioned problems.
This will only affect those with Intel chipsets.
