@Daniel: You still got it backwards. VirtualBox is in the 24.04 LTS Ubuntu repository together with the HWE kernel. This implies that both packages have been tested *and* verified to be working flawlessly together by Ubuntu. Any package for which that is not true has no business being in the repo. *None*.
By your logic you could also start including nVidia drivers that are incompatible with the current xserver. Users could still download other nvidia drivers themselves on the nvidia website, right? Include a libre- office package that breaks GNOME? No problem you can just uninstall libre-office and download it on the official website. While you are at it also install GNOME manually because, you never know which other packages might break your desktop. Include amdgpu modules that are incompatible with the current kernel? Go ahead, users can just download the official linux kernel source code and compile it themselves. Does the next package you install kill your system? I don't know, just sudo apt install and find out. I'd really appreciate if people would stop making nonsensical excuses to defend this long standing malpractice and fix the issue. There are only two acceptable options here: 1. Only release virtual-box and the HWE kernel if and only if both packages are compatible. 2. Throw one or both packages out of the repository. There are *no* other options. Ridiculous workarounds are not a solution. Next time you propose that people should start checking and manually uninstall incompatible packages you might want to post the compatibility matrix for all 206.000 packages in the Ubuntu Repo first so we can look up if the next package we plan to install plays along nicely with the packages present on the system already. Maybe, if we are lucky, someone really clever comes up with a piece of software that does this compatibility check for us automatically. We could call it a package manager wouldn't that be great? -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/2160033 Title: virtualbox-dkms fails to build with kernel 7.0 HWE To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/virtualbox/+bug/2160033/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list [email protected] https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
