It is likely a duplicate of bug 2155202. I'll mark it as such.
For your practical requests:
1.- We did communicate that in the discourse post. If you are asking is to have
a mechanism in place for doing that in the system you are right, there is no
such thing in place.
2.- There is no hardware detection mechanism in apt. This is part of the reason
we published this discourse post. It is good feedback and possibly something to
look into the future.
3.- When you say document the supported choices, do you mean somewhere else
that was not the discourse post?
