I saw a similar issue recently where the session was owned by the
greeter user but the screen was blank. In that case I recall it was a
failure to display gnome-initial-setup, but I don't remember any more
details. That would be different to "a full GNOME desktop session".
I would like to see if any key settings have been modified or left in an
unexpected state.
Please run:
journalctl -b0 > journal.txt
journalctl -b-1 > prevjournal.txt
dpkg -l > packages.txt
dconf dump /org/gnome/ > gnome-settings.txt
and attach the resulting text files here.
Please also run:
apport-collect 2143268
and be sure to use the 'ubuntu-bug' command to report bugs in future.
