I believe I was able to figure out how to do what you're looking for. The sort data function depends on whether you've selected a column or a row, so if you select the rows you want to sort before selecting Data->Sort... from the menu, then I think it does the right thing. I've attached a screencast for your viewing pleasure (try to ignore my mouse randomly jumping around, there seems to be a bug with the vmware mouse driver).
