Yes, it is quite a bother and annoyance to have a bug floating for a year. This is a proof in the breach of the truism that *n?x is a very responsive system for bug repair. The truth seems rather that the responsiveness comes quickly when a bug is inconvenient for programmer types rather than for the non-programmer types. (This, incidentally, is precisely the strength of "pay for me" OSes like Windows and Mac: they have to hold on to their user base in order to continue making money - so they'll deal with specialised "consumer issues" much more quickly than non-compensated volunteers.)
