Exactly the same as #4 happened to me (including the nonsensical "Please install..."), until I re-open the application and noticed that in the File Dialog where you select the ISO to burn, at the bottom there's a "Image Type" combo with several options, set by default as "Autodetect". Change that to ISO9660 and Brasero burns the image just fine
