I get the rationale for wanting to drop it. I don't agree with it since other distros have no problem extending support, but at least you made a PPA this time (thanks). Please remember to update the PPA for future HWE kernels, or you're just going to have another bug like this in 6 months or so.
I don't get transitioning the package to 535 since you know that's not going to work for Kepler owners (i.e. the people using the 470 driver).
