Public bug reported:
After upgrading to kernel 6.11.0-28 on Ubuntu 24.04, USB tethering using
my Xiaomi phone stopped working. It was working normally with the
previous kernel version 6.11.0-26.
Symptoms:
- USB tethering is enabled on the phone
- `lsusb` detects the device as `Xiaomi Inc. Mi/Redmi series (RNDIS)`
- However, no network interface such as `usb0` or `enx...` appears in `nmcli
device` or `ip a`
- Running `modprobe rndis_host`, `cdc_ether`, and `usbnet` manually has no
effect
- Tethering works perfectly when I boot back into kernel 6.11.0-26
This seems to be a regression in kernel 6.11.0-28, possibly related to
USB RNDIS or networking modules not being loaded properly.
System info:
- Ubuntu 24.04
- Xiaomi device using RNDIS USB tethering
- Kernel affected: 6.11.0-28-generic
- Kernel confirmed working: 6.11.0-26-generic
