IMHO, if someone wants to maintain any package, whether in Debian or Ubuntu, they should be welcome to do so provided that they do maintain it according to our usual standards. That's my opinion generally but also wearing my TB hat, so therefore I think it would be incorrect to remove the git-ubuntu deb just because it's maintained as a snap. I think Ubuntu can both be opinionated but also provide options (eg. some package in main versus various options in universe) and we don't generally remove debs from universe provided that they are maintained even if there's a snap for it. Further I'm not aware of any general principle in Ubuntu that a deb will be removed just because an equivalent snap is the default; AIUI, the deb removal happens in practice not because of that but because the equivalent deb ends up unmaintained. FWIW, to better illustrate my view, this opinion extends to a hypothetical reintroduction of a firefox deb. But we'd need to have a good maintenance and security support story for such a deb, and good quality handling of the transition of the default deb to snap transition to stay on the snap, so it seems unlikely in practice to meet my quality expectations that this would actually happen. However, my quality expectations do mean that such a package shouldn't cause bother for other non-interested Ubuntu developers (or users) any more than what might be expected from any other regular package. *If* bother happens excessively, or there are quality problems, _then_ I'd be in support of removing the deb package. Ubuntu-only bother would warrant removing the package from Ubuntu only (via archive removal and the sync blocklist); Debian typically makes its own decisions using rc bugs and release team decisions. Such decisions would be subjective, of course. But it means that if Benjamin is the sole person who wants to keep the deb in the archive, then IMHO he gets to take the responsibility of meeting my quality and no-bother expectations and he'd be the only person causing the "keeping" of the deb in the archive. So where are we now? Since the package is migrated to the release pocket I'm not aware of any quality or bother issues at the moment. Have I missed anything? Maybe this bug could be used to record such events if the situation changes, but for now, that means that my opinion is to leave it be. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/2091859 Title: RM: remove git-ubuntu [source, binaries] To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/git-ubuntu/+bug/2091859/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
