I think it was just a "bad" release of Ubuntu of some sort.  Thanks for
your concern.

Some final thoughts:

Somehow a "false attribute" got into the filesystem when using 'Repair
Filesystem' of Ubuntu 'Disks' utility, and hid all those files.   After
several days, the overnight maintenance of Windows fixed the issue.  I
doubt if Ubuntu had the capability to do the maintenance.  Windows is
full of maintenance routines (of which we often complain about) and
Linux mostly relies on a design of a "straight-filesystem" - which this
time wasn't.
