I have googled around and read through 
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingPrintingProblems, (app-armour doesn't seem to 
apply to the sparc64 server version) but I am really stuck with this one and am 
looking for something reasonable to try.  What is frustrating is that this did 
actually work with debian.
