The hang is at boot stage - so it hasnt got to lightDM/desktop - so its not possible to SSH - I scanned via nmap and it isnt seen on the network. I just see the initial date text after the splash screen, followed by writable blocks and seeing briefly the load of the broadcom driver - at that stage the monitor turns off. Switching back to fkms via a separate computer, reinserting into the pi allows the boot to be ok to the lightdm & desktop. If my issues are different from others then maybe I should raise a separate bug report.
