I downloaded the iso file again to a separate and new folder on my PC.
I used this on another thumb drive to create installation media.
The procedure progressed to completion without error.

I'm not sure what was behind the problem I encountered but it wasn't software 
or my PC hardware as far as I can see.
This problem does not now seem to exist for me. I would tend to agree that 
setting its status as invalid would seem to be appropriate. 

As for looking back over posts, perhaps you should set it as a question
or try IRC [somewhere that tends to be no use for me though]
