I haven't, yet setup the wheel for use, but I can confirm that the
reciver and the LCD appear in /dev as you mentioned above.

I'm running MythTV on the pc using this case, so by it's nature there's a *lot* 
of traffic to the LCD screen. The driver and/or daemon appear to hang 
intermittently. I've got a feeling my issues is down to interference from 
another IR device in the room (I've got a pesky nelson TV ratings box in the 
same room, and I can replicate the issue by holding down one of the buttons on 
the remote for that box). In this case, the only way I can fix the issue is by 
completely power cycling the hardware (ie, by removing power for 15-20 seconds)
I've tried restarting Lirc, removing and re-inserting the modules, and just 
about everything else I can think of, and the issue is only resolved if I power 
cycle the server.

I'm starting to wonder if my bug is different to yours. The issue isn't
a deal breaker for me, but it can be a pita at times.
