This happens for me occasionally as well.  I use the web browser a lot
(Firefox).  While I haven't lost "original work" due to this bug, I have
lost work in web browsing.  As mentioned above, I will use Ctrl-w to
close a browser tab and many more that I wanted open will close.  When
using Ctrl-n to open a new window, I will get 20+ windows opened,
bringing the system to a grinding slowdown while I frantically tap on
keys (Ctrl) to register the keyup to stop the key repeat.
