I have to agree with elias's comments on the 8/10/07 this is an
embarrassing situation for Ubuntu. I, like so many others experience
this problem and have been tracking this bug report for a long while; I
mean, it has been going now for 8 months! I see little or no point in
giving more information as nothing seems to being done to actually fix
this problem and there's no structured mechanism to track the
information provided in these bug reports; it's all pretty much just a
bunch of random information.

I used to use external mass storage USB devices on my IBM laptop a lot
under Windows with no issues. Those same devices on the same laptop
produce the errors already reported in Ubuntu many many times above.

This one issue is giving Ubuntu and Linux in general bad press which is
such a shame. This is definitely one situation where Windows and
Microsoft have the upper hand.
