Confirming the same happening on Thinkpad T42 (ATI Radeon 7500). Desktop locks up, usually with just mouse cursor moving (and some visual artifacts on top of the screen). I noticed however, that usually it is possible to put the keyboard in raw mode (Alt-SysRq-R) and then switch to a text console ( eg. Alt-Ctrl-F1). From here it is at least possible to restart X (btw - any chance of restarting window manager / X etc. without killing open applications?...) The output of top shows compiz.real consuming ~100% CPU time...
