I researched why my applets broke when logging in with LinuxTSC. Big difference between local display on the machine and remeotely accessing is: Local, "Visual effects" and "Wobbly Windows" are activated. I found out that then you cannot name your desktops in the desktop chooser, only after disabling. It might be worth trying to disable all visual effects on the machine locally, then trying to xdmcp to it.
