I discovered this same issue with my Ubuntu 7.10 I discovered that no repositories at all were selected under System > Administration > Software Sources. When I selected the appropriate repositories here, this problem with Totem / Movie Player was resolved.
I believe my problem was caused by my internet connection being down when I installed Ubuntu.
