I'm not sure whether I get these media-error bugs in Gutsy too. My guess about what's happening :
Gutsy interacts in some different way with SATA drives. Gutsy puts my SATA drive in some "mode" which works fine for Gutsy but is remembered through soft-resets of the machine.
