Apologies for my delayed response - What you suggest is now easier said than 
done.  I am now getting the following error:
I cannot apt-get upgrade anymore either, and cannot start X on that machine at 
all anymore.  Even if I delete my xorg.conf and reboot it, every attempt to 
create a new usable xorg.conf using the startup dialog fails.  I can't simply 
delete my diversions file but I am not sure how to fix it.
