Seriously though, no problem.

1. "Upstream" would have been an idea, but I haven't found anything
lxde/lxpanel related on GNOME Bugzilla. Pretty sure I was at the wrong
place...

2. The version I compiled is this here:

And again, I can't but agree with you that you MAY have to ask for it because 
of being unable to find it on your own.
Everything is so abysmally documented...

I had to google quite a bit until I found that repo I *actually* wanted.

The Github repo (https://github.com/lxde) will lead you totally up the
garden path, because there will be no lxpanel for you, just lots of lxQt
stuff.
