Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. I noticed that a new kernel was published today (2.6.22-12.36). Care to try installing this newer kernel and see if this bug still occurs. The reason I ask is that the following patch was merged on Sept 18th in response to bug 117331.
