This bug is flagged as wishlist, however, it is serious regarding how non-linux savy people react to it. When an fsck happens, most people think the machine has frozen on them and press the reset button, just to fall back to the black command prompt on the next startup. As a short term solution, I would suggest to provide at least a feedback to the user to be patient and showing a graphical progress bar in the same style as the graphical boot screen. Like this the user knows that the machine has not crashed but is doing maintenance work.
