+1 to package the new gitg version, because it isn't just a bugfix
release, this version has major UI improvements over the one on the
ubuntu repos. And as a user it is *very* difficult to compile and
install from source (missing files, missing git submodules, many other
dependencies that have to be manually compiled, ...). I have already
tried two times (ubuntu 13.10 and ubuntu 14.04), and wasn't able to
compile it in both.
