The log file you're looking for here is ~/.cache/upstart/gnome- session.log. Please check for that and attach it to this bug.
Running "compiz --replace" from the terminal will not necessarily start Unity. You are better off running /usr/bin/unity to restart unity so the correct configuration will pick up the correct plugins.
