The grub menu is not displayed during the delay, shown by setting the grub menu to display for 10 seconds & wait for selection of kernel. After I disconnected a USB powered hub, problem went away. When I reconnected hub & plugged in devices to it one by one, still OK. I assume that one of usb plugs was loose.
