On Sony SZ3, I get the same problem where the wifi network is detecetd, tries o connect but times out. If I try the solution from Reinhard Tartler, NM connects fine! In /var/log/syslog: First attachment, connects with wire, then unplug wire, try to connect to unsecure wifi
