$ ypmatch -k barney passwd.byname
barney barney:$1$XXYYZZ:500:500:ZZZZ Barney:/home/barney:/bin/bash

I don't know what you mean by:
'Do your /etc/passwd and /etc/group have the +::::: entries in them (with an
appropriate number
of colons)?"

in /etc/passwd or /etc/group I don't see any entries that just have
+:::::

I do see a number of entries with a : delimited format, but none for
barney (one of the users from NIS).

Local accounts work as expected I should add (my account is local) and I
do see it in /etc/passwd and listed as a member of some groups in
/etc/groups.

If you let me know of what exactly you mean by +::::: I can tell you if
I can see it.
