JuJuBee: What do you mean by the "user management module"? Needing to
disable the compat entries sounds like a bug in whichever package is
providing that software and is probably worth reporting.

Casey: I literally mean lines like the one posted. When using NIS in
compat mode (which your nsswitch.conf says you are - it's the
recommended mode and the default mode) you need to add lines in that
form to passwd, group and shadow to tell libc to search NIS for account
data. See section 2 of /usr/share/doc/nis/nis.debian.howto.gz for
details.

/etc/passwd needs '+::::::', /etc/group needs '+:::' and if you're using
it /etc/shadow needs '+::::::::' (the number of colons is the number of
fields in the given file).
