I was interrupted when writing the last post, so here's some more. Motherboard is Asus P5W DH Deluxe, and the wireless is fixed onboard as an usb device (not really sure it's usb but windows thinks its removable and it's fixed into motherboard as a little independent device).
NVidia card is a pretty 7950gx2. I now realize I missed an important detail before. Connection hanging may be a better description of the problem, as networkmanager does not say the connection is down. The connection stops working, but there's no sign it's disconnected.
