Public bug reported: This bug is reported while running 3.2.0-30-generic, but occurs when running 3.2.0-33-generic or 3.2.0-34-generic (more often on -34).
Intermittently, the hard disk (Crucial m4 SSD) will report I/O errors, and nothing can be written to disk any longer. Nothing at all - it becomes hard to even soft-reset the machine. After reboot, fsck (including fsck -cyf) reports no errors except for a few orphaned inodes (but that is to be expected), and everything runs smoothly until the troubles start over. I've looked through my kernel logs/system logs, but unfortunately there's nothing in there - after all, the log can't be written either. However, going by the fsck runs at bootup, the problems started around Nov 7th. That seems to coincide roughly with the period of time over which I've experienced these troubles. According to the file system dates, -33 appears to be from Oct 18th, around which time I had no troubles - but booting that kernel merely reduced the number of incidents, and did not avoid them entirely. On a whim, I decided to downgrade to -30 (Aug 24th) which as yet has not produced these problems. Booting into windows from a different hard disk and checking the sectors on the Linux disk also shows no problems. It's a bit difficult to narrow it down to a particular linux version, but it does seem to be a kernel bug rather than faulty hardware.
