*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1048059 ***
    https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1048059

See bug #1048059: The workaround is to open a terminal, then enter the
following without comments, $USERNAME being a variable. Here you should
fill in your actual username:

# Add a folder
sudo mkdir /media/$USERNAME

# assign the folder to my user
sudo chown $USERNAME.$USERNAME /media/$USERNAME

Please give feedback wether this helps.

Kind regards,

Stefan

Title:
I have the same problem with two upgraded versions of Ubuntu 32bit
12.10. USB, alternate partitions of the boot drive are not available.
They can be manually mounted via sudo mount, but are not otherwise
  accessible.
