Hi Joseph Thanks for your reply. Having re-installed Ubuntu 12.10 (previously Kubuntu 12.10 with same problem) I was surprized that everything worked (visible desktop) although the responsiveness of the desktop was VERY slow (I guess propriatery drivers will help here when available). So I guess this bug report can be closed now. If there is anything I can do to improve the responsiveness, please let me know (it really is quite unusable, i.e laggy).
