Hi Joseph Seems I spoke too soon as the black screen has now re-appeared with this install. After a couple of reboots, the screen is still black. I have applied the latest upstream kernel as suggested and the desktop is now visible again although very slow as mentioned before. As before, not sure whether the black screen will re-occur in the future so have tagged as "kernel-fixed-upstream". Please adjust if incorrect or advise if I should now report the OS's slowness as another bug.
