OK, it seems I'm not done yet. After a reboot I don't get the warning in
the console anymore. The core-util errors are gone, too. However I still
get the

Jun 17 15:19:43 cimer pulseaudio[11929]: main.c: Root priviliges required.
Jun 17 15:19:43 cimer pulseaudio[11932]: main.c: Root priviliges required.
Jun 17 15:19:53 cimer pulseaudio[11947]: main.c: Root priviliges required.

errors in /var/log/user.log

For some strange reason, when I start "gedit" I get two copies of the
message, but when I start "gterminal" I get only one. Strange. I think
gedit might spawn two processes and kill one of them later.

I don't know where to go next. Here's a bit more info:

$ ps aux |grep pulse
pulse     8526  0.8  0.3   7620  3252 ?        S<s  15:11   0:05
/usr/bin/pulseaudio --system --daemonize --high-priority --log-target=syslog
--disallow-module-loading=0
$ groups pulse
pulse : pulse audio pulse-rt
$ ls -l /usr/bin/pulseaudio
-rwsr-xr-x 1 root root 35552 2007-05-29 04:43 /usr/bin/pulseaudio
$ groups bogdanb
bogdanb : bogdanb [...] audio [...] admin [...] pulse pulse-access pulse-rt

So as far as I can tell I'm in all the relevant groups, pulseaudio is in
all the relevant groups and the binary is suid root. What am I missing?
