Further update: tried again and in "select and install software" went to "manual selection" and deselected all libre office files. Now the installation runs completely and I get a complete Ubuntu installation. It behaves strangely (dock icons not showing, software centre graying out on interactions), so I might have overlooked something... but it is further than I got before.
