autopano-sift is not autopano-sift-c. While the first is not even supported officially in hugin, the latter has been dropped from the package repositories due to the fact that it was patent encumbered. In a fresh 12.04 install, the default CP generator is CPFind. In a upgraded installation where older hugin preferences are around, it is recommended to set the Conptrol Point Detectors in the preferences to default values. It was decided to keep the entries for APSC around in hugin 2011.04 for a small minority of users that may have a self compiled version of APSC lying around. It is expected that support for APSC will be dropped completely in further versions of hugin.
