Dave, I added the alsa-daily ppa, and then installed alsa-hda-dkms. I had no sound at all on reboot; I tried with the options snd-hda-intel model=asus line and without. Just the dummy driver in the sound settings menu.
I am trying to go back to the bad sound. I really am quite sad at the fact that, since ubuntu 8.04, EVERY upgrade meant broken sound for a month at least.
